- Indore and Udaipur have become the first two Indian cities to be included in the global list of wetland cities recognised under the Ramsar Convention.
- This latest list recognises 31 new cities, including two from India, taking the global list of such cities to 74.
- Recognition is granted only to cities that meet all six international criteria, including adopting measures to conserve wetlands and their ecological services.
- The International Convention on Wetlands, also known as the Ramsar Convention, was signed on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran and came into force on 21 December 1975.
- India signed the Ramsar Convention on 1 February 1982.
- Currently, 85 wetlands in India are protected under the treaty.
- Â He also performed India’s first successful coronary artery bypass surgery in 1975. He performed India’s first heart-lung transplant.
- Dr KM Cherian recently released his biography in Kerala.
- Biography is titled Hand of God and is written by Priya M. Menon.
- In Chennai, he established a medical science park called Frontier Mediville.
- Considered a pioneer of pediatric heart surgery in India.
- He was the honorary cardiac surgeon to the Indian President from 1990 -1993.
